Make it Last (Friends & Lovers)

Make it LastBy Bethany Lopez

Self Published
Publication Date: November 12, 2012
Genre: New Adult Contemporary
Source: Purchased

In a small town, it’s hard to recover from being dumped by your high school sweetheart. That’s just what Briana has to do after Colin leaves her to follow his dreams. She focuses her energy into her friendships and the pursuit of her own goal of becoming a chef. Just when she finally feels like she’s on the right path, he comes back to town.

Colin knew breaking up with Briana before leaving for college was the right thing to do. He was determined to leave small-town life behind forever, and that included his high school girlfriend. But when a sports injury puts him on the sidelines, he’s forced to return home. Seeing Briana again brings back a lot of memories, and Colin wonders if he made the right decision. It doesn’t take long for him to realize he wants her back, and this time, he wants to make it last.

Goodreads Summary

I made it a little mission of mine to read as many New Adult (or YA-Mature, whichever works for you) books this year as I could find the time for. I’ve been slacking a little and hadn’t read any in the last 2 months or so, so when I saw Lopez’ book making the rounds for a blog tour complete with some interesting excerpts, I didn’t hesitate to buy it.

Having a guy break up with his girl before he heads off to college for her own good isn’t exactly the most ground-breaking beginning to a NA story I’ve read and the tone of the first chapter had me feeling a little tentative about this one. Colin feels like he has to dump Briana because he thinks he’s going to hold her back while he’s away. So he says some mean things to her and she swears he’ll never get a second chance with her. I was a little uncomfortable with Colin’s voice – it seemed very feminine – and yeah, there were quite a few more imaginative ways to head into a story setting up an explosive reunion, but I was on board for it. NA means the author gets to be more explicit, so bring it!

Fraterfest Read-A-Thon Challenge: Cover Sleuth

Sorry, I fixed the Rafflecopter form!

I hope you’re all tearing through your TBR pile during the Fraterfest Read-A-Thon so far! When I volunteered to host a challenge, our lovely hostess, Kimba the Caffeinated Reader left the details to me. I thought about torturing you with a poetry contest (someone else may be doing that) but decided since I’m a complete book cover ‘ho, I’d chop a bunch up and let you see if you can figure out which books they are.

All of the books are from 2011 or 2012 and have something to do with something scary or violent. You don’t need to give me the author’s name – no extra credit! – just the title of the book. Everyone who plays along gets one entry, then for each correct guess, you’ll get an additional entry.

To win, you must be participating in the Fraterfest Read-A-Long! You can sign up and join in any time – the details are here at the Fraterfest Read-A-Thon page at Kimba’s.

Now the good stuff! I’m a little prize-picked out at the moment and picking a scary one is really beyond me. So I’m letting you shop for yourself. The giveaway is open to international entries and the winner will pick their choice of up to $10US to spend at either Amazon.com, BN.com or The Book Depository (you can pick an ebook!).

The giveaway will run from today (Saturday the 6th) at 4:00 p.m. to Monday the 8th at 4:00 p.m. I’ll announce and email the winner on Wednesday. If anyone has any questions, feel free to email me!

Fraterfest Read-A-Thon Starting Line

Fraterfest

It’s time for some more motivation for working through my TBR pile! The Fraterfest Read-A-Thon is hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Reader and stretches from right after midnight on the 5th to midnight on the 8th. There are going to be some challenges with various other blogger hosts during those three days (including yours truly on Saturday afternoon) and on Sunday from 6-8 pm EST, there’ll be a Twitter party (#Fraterfest). I’ve been told there will be prizes and fun, so you know, you want to join in. You really, really do.

The Schedule of Events

I’m just going to come back and update this page with my challenge entries and post reading updates, but I’d better start with goals first. I’m going to start big and assume that I’ll never sleep. Okay, so some of these aren’t scary/creepy books, but I’m behind on my reviewing, people!

Velveteen  by Daniel Marks
Valkyrie Rising  by Ingrid Paul
Mystic City  by Theo Lawrence
Crewel  by Gennifer Albin

I’m setting up my Keurig next to my chair, bringing my Kindle charger over and I’m stocked up on chocolate and Cheetos. :) See you at the finish line!

Summer Wrap-Up Read-a-Thon: Wicked Summer Cover Challenge/Book Puzzle

Well this one was fun. Or headache-inducing. One or the other or both. It certainly put my Google-fu to the test since I can only remember covers from four or five months ago.

Of course I’m continuing my bleary-eyed quest to plow through my TBR pile for the read-a-thon, hosted by the wonderful Jude at In Between (seriously, she’s a nice chick, go friend her on Goodreads), and the equally wonderful Jennifer at Some Like it Paranormal (make it a party, friend them both). Somehow I’m managing to read everything except what I’m supposed to. I need Cait to crack the whip on me.

So the aptly-named Wickedly Bookish has come up with a challenge to find various covers depicting some summer items. Some of them are downright obscure, not that you’d think so. Have you ever tried to find a book with a sleeping bag on it? If someone says they know of one off of the top of their head, I’ll cry, so say it behind my back, please. I decided to go the ridiculously difficult way and try not to pick obvious books. Well, except one and that was for Cait. So here, are my picks:

One more challenge to add. I don’t think this one will be too hard to get. The pictures represent a book title.

Summer Wrap-up Challenge: Hotter than Summer Boys

It’s a dirty job but someone has to do it and I’m just that someone. We’ll just pretend it’s not Sunday, right? My mom doesn’t read my blog anyway.

So it’s day 2 of the Summer Wrap-Up Read-a-Thon hosted by Jennifer at Some Like it Paranormal and Jude at In Between Writing and Reading and Trini at A Book Lovers Review has devised a completely torturous challenge.

  1. List a character/s that I think are HOTTER than summer
  2. Add the book title and/or cover
  3. Put my rating
  4. Link up my review
  5. Explain why I picked him

Psh, is that all? I…can’t take until the end of the year? I have to pick from books I reviewed this year? But what about J.D. Robb’s Roarke? I have to include him! And Jeaniene Frost’s Bones! *shakes fist* Why haven’t I reviewed every single book I’ve read??

3. Sig from the Secret McQueen series

My Rating:

4 Tighty Whiteys

Deep Dark Secret (Secret McQueen #3)
Keeping Secret (Secret McQueen #4)

Why Sig? It’s pretty hot that he’s an incredibly powerful 2000 year-old vampire and the head of the Tribunal. But my darling, enigmatic Scandinavian cupcake likes to wander around menacing people in nothing more than his leather pants. Sierra said she has Alexander Skarsgard in mind when she thinks of Sig and my first reaction was “eew,” but the idea has grown on me. Now I have to say that my reaction is more along the lines of, “RAWR.”

2. Lothaire from Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series

My Rating:

4 Tighty Whiteys

Lothaire (Immortals After Dark #12) by Kresley Cole

Vampires are a trend with me. I had a long list of maybes and a lot of them were bloodsuckers. Lothaire, Lothaire. He’s not your typical hero. Well, he’s not really a hero. He’s narcissistic, cruel, ruthless and a bully. He’s also dead sexy and mostly insane. When he’s gettin’ sexy, he loses it and starts talking in Russian. *oh my* I don’t even care if he’s certifiable.

1. Lucas/Landon from Easy by Tammara Webber

My Rating:

5 Tighty Whiteys with extra hearts

Easy by Tammara Webber

Landon is that thoughtful, brilliant guy you take home to meet your parents. He flirts wickedly online, his beautiful brain one of his best assets. Lucas is sex on a stick, the kind of guy that starts revving your engine the minute his eyes flick over you. Landon and Lucas are the same person, creating a perfect storm of lethal hotness, guaranteed to make a girl melt into a puddle

A nerdy brain, tattoos, a lip piercing and bedhead? Not something I’d usually go for, but he’s definitely the Hottest of the Hot this Summer.
