Crimson Frost

For a moment, a face flashed before my eyes—the most hideous face I’d ever seen. No matter how hard I tried to forget what had happened, I saw him everywhere I went. It was Loki—the evil god that I’d helped set free against my will.

I should have known that my first official date with Logan Quinn was destined to end in disaster. If we’d gotten into a sword fight, or been ambushed by Reapers, I’d have been more prepared. But getting arrested mid-sip at the local coffee hangout? I didn’t see that one coming.

I’ve been accused of purposely helping the Reapers free Loki from his prison—and the person leading the charge against me is Linus Quinn, Logan’s dad. The worst part is that pretty much everyone at Mythos Academy thinks I’m guilty. If I’m going to get out of this mess alive, I’ll have to do it myself…

Happy Thursday everyone! In case y’all were wondering, I was only sick for a day. It was a little 24hr bug, as opposed to the week and a half bug my hubs and daughter caught a few weeks ago. Thank heavens. The last thing I need around the holidays is to be laid low for a week or so. Anyway, I’ve had a dang good reading week. Opal by JLA was released early (woo hoo!), and I promptly jumped on that band wagon and bought my copy yesterday. It’s already been devoured read, so my review will come next week. I’m still traumatized from the ending. I’m convinced that JLA is out to crush my heart into little bitty pieces, gleefully tossing them into the wind to parts unknown. She kills me. Anyway, back to the book I’m supposed to be reviewing. Crimson Frost. Yet another author that is determined to squeeze the life out of me with her books. I balled like a baby in the last book, Dark Frost, and I didn’t think it was possible to cry harder while reading a book than that one. Then I read Crimson Frost and I became a sobbing, snotty mess. If that’s not enough of an endorsement, I don’t know what is. ;-)

After two rounds of sickness in my household, I’ve now managed to get sick myself. Because I’m the whiniest sick person I know, I decided that losing myself in a book was the best way to get through this nasty stomach bug without my hubs and daughter running to the nearest hotel in fear. None of my Netgalley books appealed to me, nor any of the books sitting on my GR to-read list (some having been there for ages), so I spent a little time on Amazon looking for something new. I stumbled on this little gem which had good reviews on both Amazon AND GR, and it was only $.99. SCORE!

I swore to myself after my last HQN fiasco, that I’d never pick one off Netgalley again. And then I saw that HQN is coming out with this new line, and then I read the synopsis of this book, and my self control crumbled to dust. Have you ever seen the movie What Happens in Vegas with Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher? Waking Up Married is a little like that. Except in the book, there’s no lottery, and no judge mandating they stay married in order to keep the money. And Megan and Connor don’t hate each other. So, really, the only similarity is that both of the couples got married on a whim in Vegas. For some reason that particular plot point calls to me, because I enjoyed both the movie and the book.

Good morning y’all! We’re back from our week off, and we feel rejuvenated. Although, my Thanksgiving was pretty uneventful, seeing as how everyone was sick. Except me. So my MIL and I spent all of Wed night, and all day Thurs in the kitchen preparing a wonderful meal that no one could eat. Isn’t that always the way it goes?

I decided to start the week off with the latest release in the Experiment in Terror series. Into the Hollow is the sixth book,  and after On Demon Wings, I was hoping for some resolution in Dex and Perry’s relationship. The ending of the fourth book destroyed even the friendship the two had built up, and Dex was barely around in On Demon Wings. Well, until the very end when he swooped in and saved the day. Now he’s back, and Dex is determined to fix what went wrong between him and Perry.

Deity

Jennifer L. Armentrout

Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Publication Date: Nov 6, 2012
Genre: Paranormal/Fantasy Young Adult
Source: Purchased

“History is on repeat, and things didn’t go so well the last time. ”

Alexandria isn’t sure she’s going to make it to her eighteenth birthday–to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she’s a goner… and so is Aiden.

If that’s not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time “training”–which really is just Seth’s code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time–she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she’s caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed… and destroyed.

Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate…

I’m a regular reader of JLA’s blog, and when she slyly mentioned that Amazon had released Deity early, I hurried over there and two clicks later I had a brand spankin’ new copy downloaded on my Kindle. Don’t you just love the digital age? Thank goodness I didn’t have to go anywhere on Friday, and in between moments of playing with the munchkin, I read as much as I could. Deity was AWESOME.

I am continually impressed with JLA’s ability to progress a series. A lot of authors fall into the “filler novel” trap, where one or two books seem to serve no purpose other than to make the series longer than it should be. I have never encountered that problem with either of JLA’s YA series. Each book has a purpose, a focus, and Deity is no exception. Although, I can’t believe where JLA took her characters in this book. Talk about shock and awe!

I just want to state for the record, that I was freakin’ RIGHT about Seth. I never thought of him as a possible romantic interest for Alex. He always seem too obsessed with himself and his status as Apollyon to ever let anyone into that small circle, including Alex. I always thought that the Team Seth and Team Aiden business was complete nonsense. It always was, and always ever will be, Aiden. And let me tell you folks, Aiden really steps up his game in this book. We are finally able to see some resolution between him and Alex, and the fall is so sweet. Aiden, I salute you my friend. I’ve been wary of you up until this point, unsure if you could do right by Alex. But you’ve proven yourself, and I’m now your biggest fan.

Seth broke my heart. I guess the lure of power was too much, and Seth wasn’t strong enough to resist. I’ve always loved Seth’s character. He’s arrogant, sexy and selfish, and I could never tell if he was the hero or the villain. But he had a vulnerable and fun side that pushed through every once in awhile, and I lived for those moments. Oh Seth, please be savable. I’m not sure if I could fully enjoy the series if you don’t find your happily ever after too.

And then there’s the ending. Holy cliffhanger Batman! It’s a good thing we don’t have to wait too long for the next book, because I’m dying to know what happens next. Although I feel strongly that Alex’s world is only going to get worse before it gets better. SOB.

Deity was full of action and packed the emotional punch typical of JLA, which keeps bringing me back for more. An exciting addition to the Covenant series, and a definite must read!

Fourth Grave Beneath my Feet

Darynda Jones

ometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.

In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.

Goodreads Summary

Add to your shelf

I LOVE this series. I didn’t start reading it until after the third book was released, and only then because my MIL loved the books and I wanted to have something else in common besides marriage. I don’t know why I was so antagonistic to the series in the beginning, but once I finished First Grave on the Right, I kicked myself in the butt and immediately read books two and three. I love being surprised every once in awhile, don’t you?

The aspect of the series that I enjoy the most is the snark. Charley has some of the best one-liners I’ve ever read. She is such a unique character, and I love being in her head. Charley and her secretary, Cookie, have some of the craziest conversations. I’m talking laugh-until-you-almost-pee-your-pants crazy conversations. Charley can be so juvenile and immature, but Cookie just gets her and goes along with it. Jones does a great job of balancing out the serious with the humor. Even though Charley’s life is difficult at times, and she’s often thrown under the bus by those closest to her, she somehow always manages to pick herself up and finds joys in the little things. At the end of the books I’m never left feeling devastated, despite what I’ve just read. The humor and wit is definitely not to be missed.

And then there’s Reyes Farrow. Holy. cow. Hands down, one of the sexiest heroes I’ve ever read. Not only in physical appearance, but also in his absolute devotion to Charley. In Fourth Grave several people mentioned to Charley that Reyes isn’t all he seems, and Charley has to decide whether to listen to them or not. Sometimes the motivation behind what Reyes does isn’t always apparent, and yeah, maybe some of his actions can be construed as shady. But he is there for Charley every single time, and I’ve always believed that actions speak louder than words. I guess Charley thinks so too, because the two finally have some smokin’ bedroom scenes. Well, they’ve always had those but in this book they’re both actually there physically. And uhh.. Reyes is a freakin’ sex god y’all. Just sayin’.

While I love the series and would recommend them, I’m starting to get frustrated with the pacing of the series. There is supposed to be this big event over the horizon, some big war between good and evil, but we don’t know any more information about it now than we did in the beginning. Everyone keeps telling Charley that she “really needs to know what she can do” or “needs to stop thinking like a human” and all the talk is getting old. I hope in the next book we’re let in on the big secret, because I’m ready for it. I’ve been ready for it. Or maybe I’m just too impatient, and I should zip my lips and just enjoy the ride. Hmm.. not a bad idea. ;-)
