Review: Broken by A.E. Rought

Imagine a modern spin on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein where a young couple’s undying love and the grief of a father pushed beyond sanity could spell the destruction of them all.

A string of suspicious deaths near a small Michigan town ends with a fall that claims the life of Emma Gentry’s boyfriend, Daniel. Emma is broken, a hollow shell mechanically moving through her days. She and Daniel had been made for each other, complete only when they were together. Now she restlessly wanders the town in the late Fall gloom, haunting the cemetery and its white-marbled tombs, feeling Daniel everywhere, his spectre in the moonlight and the fog.

When she encounters newcomer Alex Franks, only son of a renowned widowed surgeon, she’s intrigued despite herself. He’s an enigma, melting into shadows, preferring to keep to himself. But he is as drawn to her as she is to him. He is strangely… familiar. From the way he knows how to open her locker when it sticks, to the nickname she shared only with Daniel, even his hazel eyes with brown flecks are just like Daniel’s.

The closer they become, though, the more something inside her screams there’s something very wrong with Alex Franks. And when Emma stumbles across a grotesque and terrifying menagerie of mangled but living animals within the walls of the Franks’ estate, creatures she surely knows must have died from their injuries, she knows.

As soon as I saw Broken, I knew I had to have it. Not only was it a retelling of Frankenstein, one of the very best monster stories ever, but instead of a vaguely modern twist of the tale, I had the impression that this was going to be a little more atmospheric and faithful to the original. I think the end product was more of a decent YA paranormal with some spooky spots and a couple of homages to Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Emma has been mourning the tragic death of her boyfriend and first love Daniel for months, constantly returning to the cemetery where they used to hang out and where he should have been laid to rest now if his parents hadn’t refused to hold a burial. Now that the first semester of school is half gone, things have fallen into a predictable daily pattern for Emma of running late for school, grabbing a coffee from the local hot spot and trading insults with the school jerk, all before the opening bell. Following an especially unsettling visit to the cemetery the night before, the school day goes off-kilter when a new student appears.

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

I probably shouldn’t be throwing down a prediction that the second book I’m reviewing in 2013 is going to end up on my Best of the Year list, but I’m pretty comfortable that Splintered will be there. I was completely captivated, swept up in the danger and romance of the story and for once, when I looked at the progress bar at the bottom of my Kindle it wasn’t to see how close I was to finishing, it was to make sure I had a lot more book to read still. I didn’t want this story to end.

I wish I could say I spent the last week with my nose plastered to my Kindle like I planned, but I was a slacker and bought a lot more than I read. I did it for the economy! Doing eggnog shots or staring off into space was only interesting for so long though, so I got back some reading mojo, remembered why I was so excited to pick up The Dead and Buried (Kim Harrington – YA – whoa!), and jumped into this creepy, twisty ghost story.

As you’re reading this, I’m probably chest-deep in a snow drift. We got smacked with a blizzard yesterday and since I have to find my way out of the house eventually, I might as well melt my way out with the heat I’m probably still throwing off from reading Someone to Love. If you have delicate sensibilities, this isn’t the book for you. This isn’t even the review for you. If you’re looking for an intense, hot college romance though, read on.

Did you know there is actually a thing called a theory about Indigo children? I may be living in a cave, because I had no idea (no comments from the peanut gallery about my age and caves). I ended up losing an hour once I started on the Wikipedia page and then went off following links – it’s fascinating, even if you don’t buy the ideas. Calling Mulder and Scully!

I can confidently say that this might be the worst review I’ve ever written. Not because the book was horrible, but because I’m hopped up on all sorts of cold medicine right now and I’m unable to string together two coherent thoughts. Seriously, this cold/flu thing I’ve been rockin’ for the last two weeks will. not. die. I also drove to Jackson, MS over the weekend (yes, while high on cold medicine) for my dad’s birthday and it was pretty much the worst trip in the history of trips. Look up dysfunctional in the dictionary and my family’s picture will be right there. So, because I can’t just write “It was cute, I liked it” without Barbara firing me on the spot, you get a review in list form.

Continue past the page break at your own risk. O_o
