Cover Reveal: Shooting Scars (The Artists Trilogy #2) by Karina Halle

I do a lot of very pretty cover reveals. Some that are sexy in a sweet, romantic way. This cover by Najla Qamber Designs is knock-you-down, make-you-tingle, I-want-it, sexy (of course it’s worse/better if you’ve read the first book). No other way to describe it. Sins & Needles has such a striking cover that looks almost Victorian until you look closely at it. There’s nothing Victorian about this. Oh, Camden. Rawr. Check out  my review of Sins & Needles below the cover reveal post – May never seemed so far away. *cries*

The Author Bio
Karina HalleThe daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).

Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently lives on an island on the coast of British Columbia where she’s preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

Genre: Adult Contemporary

Ellie Watt is used to starting over. The daughter of a grifting team, Ellie spent her childhood being used as a pawn in her parents’ latest scam. Now she’s much older, wiser and ready to give her con artist life a rest. But returning to the dry desert town of Palm Valley, California means one more temptation than she bargained for – Camden McQueen. Once known as the high school weirdo, Camden is bigger and badder than the boy he used to be and a talented tattoo artist with his own thriving business. Ellie’s counting on Camden still being in love with her but what she’s not counting on is how easily unrequited love can turn into obsession over time. When Camden discovers Ellie’s plan to con him, he makes her a deal she doesn’t dare refuse, but her freedom comes with a price and it’s one that takes both Ellie and Camden down a dangerous road.

***The Artists Trilogy is a dark and sexy contemporary ride about three flawed individuals caught in a world where it’s so easy to justify the bad things we do. This is a pure adult read (Not YA or NA).

After I finished this, I went to Goodreads and changed my temporary review from, “does ‘want to read’ mean ‘give me this or I’ll bite your face off?’” to “Mind. Blown.” That’s pretty much it, but it would be especially lousy if I left my review there. First things first – believe the synopsis when it says that this isn’t YA or NA. It isn’t erotica, but there’s a reason it’s an adult book. Second – set aside a block of time needed to finish the entire thing in one sitting. You don’t want to stop and start this. Third – toss out your notions of a conventional romance with damaged people. These two are the unexpected.

Into the Hollow

Series: Experiment in Terror #6
Publisher: Metal Blonde Books
Publication Date: Nov 15, 2012
Genre: Horror/Paranormal Romance
Source: Purchased

Perry Palomino has fought her demons – and won – but the battle is far from over. She’s now left broken and on her own, leaving behind her life and family in Portland to focus on giving Dex Foray – and the Experiment in Terror show – a second chance. But their past mistakes continue to tease and test their relationship, as does the wild and desolate terrain of the Canadian Rockies. The snow-covered peaks and ravenous forests hide an urban legend too unbelievably frightening to be true and the only way the duo has a chance of surviving is if Perry can let in the very man who sent her to hell and back.

Good morning y’all! We’re back from our week off, and we feel rejuvenated. Although, my Thanksgiving was pretty uneventful, seeing as how everyone was sick. Except me. So my MIL and I spent all of Wed night, and all day Thurs in the kitchen preparing a wonderful meal that no one could eat. Isn’t that always the way it goes?

I decided to start the week off with the latest release in the Experiment in Terror series. Into the Hollow is the sixth book,  and after On Demon Wings, I was hoping for some resolution in Dex and Perry’s relationship. The ending of the fourth book destroyed even the friendship the two had built up, and Dex was barely around in On Demon Wings. Well, until the very end when he swooped in and saved the day. Now he’s back, and Dex is determined to fix what went wrong between him and Perry.

On Demon Wings (Experiment in Terror #5)

Karina Halle

Publisher: Metal Blonde Books
Publication Date: May 13, 2012
Genre: Paranormal Suspense
Source: Purchased

When the life you wanted has crumbled beneath your fingers, there’s nothing left to do but pick up the pieces and soldier on. You’ve done this before.

But what happens when you no longer feel like yourself anymore? When fires spontaneously start-up around you, when you hear growling coming from underneath your bed, and you no longer recognize your face in the mirror. What happens then?

Ghost-hunter Perry Palomino doesn’t have much time to find out. Now, the evil she used to hunt is a lot closer to home. It’s inside of her, taking over her life bit-by-terrifying bit, and there’s only one person who can help her.

If part of her doesn’t kill him first.

Goodreads Summary

I featured the first book in the series, Darkhouse, on our first You Ought to Know post a few weeks ago. I’d downloaded Darkhouse for free onto my Kindle, and then proceeded to purchase and read the rest of the books in the series in a matter of days. I’m obsessed with Dex and Perry, and it was like Christmas in May when I found out I didn’t have that much longer to wait until the fifth book was released. Especially because the ending of Lying Season, the fourth book, left me paralyzed, speechless, heart broken and miserable all at the same time. In a good way, of course. So I made a note on my calendar, bought it first thing in the morning, and spent Mother’s Day letting the hubs take care of the munchkin while I lounged around and read On Demon Wings.

Holy. smokes.

This book royally pissed me off. First of all, On Demon Wings is formatted differently that the previous books in the series. Whereas the focus of the other books was about Dex and Perry essentially ghost hunting for their online show, in this case, it would be a little difficult to do because Perry’s quit the show. So, okay, I can deal with change-up – even though the terror and suspense of the ghost hunting was a major draw for me – but I’m an adult and can deal with major life changes. I also knew that Dex would probably take up little page time because of his and Perry’s epic showdown at the end of Lying Season. And when I say epic, I mean EPIC. It was just.. painful, and I’m only an innocent bystander to the whole story. Imagine how Perry must have felt.  Now I’m down a ghost hunt and one oddball Dex (SOB!), but I trust Karina Halle and hoped everything would turn out okay.

It’s been six weeks since the end of Lying Season, and Perry has just recovered enough that she doesn’t spend most of her time crying her guts out. She’s gotten a normal job, working at a normal coffee shop and she’s even made a few new friends. She’s determined to leave Dex, the show and Dex firmly in the past. Then her life starts getting strange. Even stranger than usual. She’s been feeling ill the last few weeks, inexplicably, and her nightmares/visions have been getting more frightening and real. She’s hearing voices, trash cans are suddenly bursting into flames and Perry has nowhere to turn for help.

And that’s about how the first 3/4 of the book goes. Some creepy event occurs to Perry, she’s frightened out of her wits and then blacks out. There’s a lot of blacking out in this book. An old friend from Red Fox shows up, seemingly with all the answers, but when the going gets tough he turns on her and Perry is left with no support or anyone to believe in her except her younger sister, Ada. Of course, Perry is living with her parents, so she has her parents completely freaked out and they’ve even demanded that she start seeing her therapist again.

Events finally come to a head, and it’s almost too late for Perry when Ada finally gets a clue and calls Dex. He arrives (finally!), outraged at Perry’s current state (tied to the bed, but for safety reasons, not for kink), and kidnaps her. He drives both her and Ada (who refuses to stay behind) to a nearby shaman, with experience in ousting unwanted visitors. Dex saves Perry, despite her unwanted visitor’s many attempts to kill him, and then they all return home to a madhouse. Perry’s parents have finally had enough, and the consequences of Dex and Perry’s little trip are huge. Yes, even though Dex saved her life, they’re still not happy.

I found myself getting a little bored with all the angst, blacking out and the build up to the actual action, which didn’t occur until the 85% mark. Worse, Dex didn’t show up until the 80% mark, and since he’s probably the main draw to the series (or rather, the back and forth between the two), I spent most of my time wondering where the heck he was and what he was doing. I felt that Perry didn’t do as great a job carrying the story on her own. Up until this book, the series had been focused on both of them and how effed up they are together, and Perry’s problems just weren’t enough for me. Also, it bugs the heck out of me that she’s 23 years old and still living at home with her parents. Half of her problems would be fixed if she moved out and had her own place. By her age, I was married and had already put my husband through one tour in Iraq. Then again, maybe she wouldn’t have as much conflict if she lived on her own, and maybe there wouldn’t be a story. I have no idea, all I know is that I am done with her parents.

I do need to mention that even though I’m miffed at the book overall, Halle’s writing is purely spectacular. She has such a wonderful talent of making you feel the terror that Perry and Dex feel at any given moment. I mentioned it before, but I’ll say it again here: this is NOT a series you want to read at night, alone. You’ll freak yourself out. I also never know how the story is going to end, and I enjoy the suspense of the not knowing. I’m never tempted to look ahead, and Halle’s writing keeps me enthralled from start to finish.

My Summary: Why am I giving this book an A, even though I’m seriously annoyed with it? Because Halle made me feel. Despite my inability to love the first 80% of the book, the last 20% more than made up for the beginning. All of the elements that I love about the series were there: the amazing writing talent, the terror, the suspense and the romantic tension between Dex and Perry. Plus, even though Dex didn’t take up much page time in ODW, he’s shows up as the real Dex, the one we got to know in Lying Season. I can’t wait to see more of that Dex, and even though there are traits about Perry that I don’t get, I’m still anxious for their happily ever after. At least, I hope they have a happily ever after. I’ve given up guessing what Halle is going to do with her characters. ;-)

You Ought to Know…

When Barbara and I were brainstorming about what we wanted to post for this month’s Indie Friday, we had a hard time deciding on a particular author/book to showcase. On a random blog hopping day a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon an excellent rec list from Maryse at Marye’s Book Blog, called “What to Read After Beautiful Disaster.” I loved reading her suggestions, since I am always looking for new books that suck me in and don’t let me go until long after I’m done reading. Obviously, Maryse already has that rec list covered, so Barbara and I thought we’d just create an ongoing list recommending indie/self-pub/small-pub books that we’ve read recently that you just HAVE to know about. And, preferrably, read immediately. Sometimes we don’t always have room to review these books on the blog, but we want everyone to know how brilliant they are.

I wanted to call this feature “Cracktastic Indies” but Barbara totally shot that down. Mostly she ignored me, and probably rolled her eyes at me. Which is how she reacts to most of what I say. ;-)  Apparently we are supposed to be “sophisticated” and “mature” bloggers. Hah. Who are we kidding here?

So instead of my wonderfully creative title, I bring you:

Marcus Hardy had hoped to enjoy a year away at college while he put the summer he’d rather forget behind him. But instead, he’s jerked right back to the coastal town of Sea Breeze, Alabama due to… MORE.

This is ridiculously romantic, I sniffled my way through the last half of it. Abbi Glines is one of my new favorite authors, I’m bummed that I’ll have to wait until August for the third book in this series.

Liana Brooks

Publisher: Breathless Press
Pub Date: Apr 4, 2012
Genre: Superhero Fantasy

If you believe the rumors you know that Doctor Charm, the wickedly sexy super villain, retired in shame seven years ago after his last fight with the super hero Zephyr Girl. The fact that the charming Evan Smith—father of four and husband of the too-beautiful-to-be-real Tabitha—bears a resemblance to the defeated Doctor is pure coincidence… MORE.

Slightly warped, occasionally downright wickedly funny, this short story is really not to be missed if you get a kick out of superheroes.

Shawn is the guy Ronnie Bird promised her life to at the age of fourteen. He’s her soul mate. He’s more uptight every day, but it’s not his fault. His family life is stressful, and she’s adding to it. She just needs to be more understanding, and he’ll start to be the boy… MORE.

Wow. Powerful, touching, sad, sweet, empowering – yep, I cried through a lot of it and if my Kleenex pile is any endorsement, this isn’t to be missed.

This book definitely embodies that “cracktastic” feel that I sometimes crave. Sempre is exceptionally written, extremely moving and is completely unforgettable.

There’s always been something a bit off about Perry Palomino. Though she’s been dealing with a quarter-life crisis and post-college syndrome like any other twentysomething, she’s still not what you would call “ordinary.” For one thingMORE and MORE.

I HIGHLY recommend the whole series, as the books get better as they go along. But since you need to start at the beginning, here it is. This series is creepy, thrilling, exciting and should NOT be read at night by yourself. Even the most innocuous sound suddenly becomes sinister. The best part is the will they/won’t they between Perry and Dex. It’s completely addicting, and if you’re like me, you can’t resist buying the next book after you finish the previous, because you just have to know.

Four books are out now, with the fifth being released May 13. I’m so there!

1. Darkhouse
2. Red Fox
3. Dead Sky Morning
4. Lying Season
